At CarMax, the role of an Engineer II, Artificial Intelligence involves domain-specific knowledge in Generative AI. The engineer will create software solutions utilizing deep-learning models, particularly large language models (LLMs), and develop processes for testing, evaluating, and analyzing AI systems.
Team and Responsibilities
- Collaborate with engineers, managers, and stakeholders to enhance the customer omni-channel experience.
- Independently develop, evaluate, and deploy AI capabilities, including the use of LLMs.
- Process unstructured data for extracting valuable content.
- Experiment with new AI technologies and frameworks to drive learning.
- Gather requirements and translate them into technical implementations.
- Develop and optimize pipelines, tools, and infrastructure for service reliability.
- Execute testing procedures, report defects, and manage performance anomalies.
Essential Skills & Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or relevant field.
- Experience with large language models and prompt engineering.
- 2+ years in software development, cloud computing, systems engineering, or AI/ML.
- Basic Python development skills, scripting with shell scripts.
- Ability to influence team norms and technical vision.
Preferred Skills
- Familiarity with fine-tuning pretrained models and evaluation techniques.
- Python package development.
- Excellent communication skills.
Software Engineering Specific
- Experience with Azure OpenAI Service.
- Experience with Azure AI Search or similar info retrieval services.
- Proficiency in designing and testing LLM-based applications.
- Knowledge of DevOps, testing frameworks, and CI/CD pipelines.
- Advanced Python debugging skills.
Work Location & Authorization
- Location: Richmond, VA or Dallas, TX (Hybrid setup).
